When I first suggested a riding safari in Zimbabwe, my family and friends looked at me in amazement. I’m all for excitement but love my home comforts and have an unhealthy phobia against spiders. So camping out in the bush for 10 days didn’t really sound my cup of tea. What I didn’t expect was the lovely fun atmosphere created by Janine and James, the comfortable lodges, stunning views and gorgeous non stop food. In addition the huge range of fantastic versatile horses that manage to walk on tracks that no humans would think possible one day and play a fast and furious game of Polo X the next. If you have ever ridden for six hours through bamboo canes, up and down mountains, through streams you’ll know that all you crave is a bit of comfort. Due to the superb organizational skills of the Vardens, where ever we rolled up to camp, there was always a chilled bottle of wine, a hot water bottle, and a few giggles to be had round the camp fire, and if you’ve never drunk tequila chillies at sunset then you’ve not lived. The non stop riding was any horsey person’s dream but we also managed to walk up a mountain or two and climb into the bat caves. All in all the best holiday imaginable. Roll on next year!
